The Short Answer: One Cubic Yard Covers About 54 Square Feet at 6 Inches
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Six inches of depth is half a foot. Divide 27 by 0.5 and you get 54, so one cubic yard of loose mulch covers about 54 square feet at a 6 inch depth. That is the number most people came here for, and it is the only conversion you need to memorize.
The same math at other depths, for reference:
- 3 inches deep, about 108 square feet per yard
- 6 inches deep, about 54 square feet per yard
- 9 inches deep, about 36 square feet per yard
- 12 inches deep, about 27 square feet per yard
So the whole job is two steps. Find the true square footage of the area you are surfacing, then divide by 54. If you want to work it the long way instead, multiply square footage by 0.5 to get cubic feet, then divide by 27. Both roads land in the same place.
Step one is where almost everyone under-orders. People measure the playset. The playset is not the thing that needs mulch. The ground a child could land on is the thing that needs mulch, and it is a lot bigger than the frame. We will walk through that next, because it is the difference between one delivery and two.
One more caveat before the measuring tape comes out. That 54 square feet figure describes loose, uncompacted material as it lands off the truck. Mulch settles. That is why there is an overage section later in this post, and why the number you order is not the same as the number your calculator spits out.
Measure the Use Zone, Not the Swing Set
The area that needs cushioning is the use zone, sometimes called the fall zone. It is the ground a kid could realistically hit if they slipped, jumped, or let go. It is not the footprint of the posts and decks. A playset can occupy a small rectangle and still throw a fall zone that swallows a quarter of a small backyard.
The 6 Foot Perimeter Rule
For most stationary equipment, the general rule is that the surfaced area extends 6 feet in all directions from the equipment. Measure from the outer edge of the structure, not from a center post or the middle of the deck. That distinction matters more than it sounds like it does, because measuring from the center will short you several feet on every side.
Here is how fast the area grows. Take a play structure that measures 10 by 8 feet. Add 6 feet on each of the four sides and the surfaced area becomes 22 by 20 feet. The footprint was 80 square feet. The use zone is 440 square feet. That is more than five times the area, and at 6 inches deep it is the difference between under 2 cubic yards and about 8.
Swings Need More Room Front and Back
Swings are the exception to the tidy 6 foot border. Kids let go mid swing, and a body released at the top of an arc travels a lot farther than a body dropping off a ladder rung. The clearance in front of and behind the swing arc is commonly figured as 6 feet plus twice the height of the pivot point, meaning the beam or bracket the swing actually hangs from. The sides of the swing set still take the standard 6 feet.
Practically, that means a swing beam sitting 8 feet off the ground wants a lot of cushioned ground out front. Measure it before you assume your existing mulch bed is long enough. On a lot of backyard installs, the swing arc is the direction the mulch bed runs short.
Mixed Equipment Heights in One Zone
Depth is driven by how far a child can fall. Under ASTM F1487, the surfacing depth guidance ties to equipment height. Six inches for equipment up to 4 feet, 9 inches for equipment 4 to 7 feet, and 12 inches for equipment over 7 feet. So 6 inches is a real, legitimate number for shorter backyard sets, and if your tower deck stands above 4 feet, the headline depth in this article is not enough for your yard.
When a slide, a climber, and a swing share one open area, apply the deepest and largest requirement across the whole zone. Do not try to blend depths structure by structure. A shallow patch between two pieces of equipment is exactly the spot a kid will land on while running between them, and it is also a nightmare to maintain because you can never tell by eye where the shallow strip starts.
Before you order anything, flag or stake the corners of the use zone and walk it. Pace the length, pace the width, then stand back and look. Use zones almost always look bigger on the ground than they did on the notepad, and finding that out with stakes is free. Finding it out with a half empty pile is not.
Worked Example: A 20 by 30 Foot Rectangular Play Area
Say you have a wood playset with an 8 by 18 foot footprint, tucked into a fenced back corner with a slide on one end and two swings on the other. Add the 6 foot border on all sides and you land at roughly 20 by 30 feet of ground that needs surfacing. That is a very common shape for a backyard install.
Area first. 20 times 30 equals 600 square feet.
Now volume, shown both ways so you can follow whichever makes more sense to you:
- 600 square feet times 0.5 foot of depth equals 300 cubic feet. Divide by 27 and you get about 11.1 cubic yards.
- Or skip a step. 600 divided by 54 equals about 11.1 cubic yards.
Now compare that to what happens if you measure only the playset footprint. 8 times 18 is 144 square feet. Divided by 54, that is under 3 cubic yards. Three yards versus eleven. One of those is a delivery and a good weekend. The other is a pile that disappears under the swing beam and leaves the rest of the zone bare grass. This single mistake, measuring the frame instead of the fall zone, is the most common ordering error we see on playground jobs.
Your use zone probably is not a perfect rectangle. Playsets have odd corners, slides stick out at angles, and fences cut across. That is fine. Measure the smallest rectangle that fully contains the zone and order for that. You will end up with some extra, and extra mulch is far more useful than a second trip to the yard. Leftovers go around trees, into planting beds, or onto a path.
We are not done with this number yet. The 11.1 yards is the calculated volume, and the amount you actually order is higher once settling comes into it. Preview of where this ends up, roughly 13 yards. The next section explains why.
Worked Example: A Round Trampoline Zone
Circles use a different formula, but it is not hard. Area equals 3.14 times the radius times the radius.
Take a 14 foot round trampoline. The radius is 7 feet. Add a 6 foot cushioned border all the way around and the surfaced circle has a 13 foot radius, which is a 26 foot diameter. Run the numbers. 3.14 times 13 times 13 is about 531 square feet. Divide 531 by 54 and you get about 9.8 cubic yards at 6 inches, before any overage.
There is a practical wrinkle here that the math does not tell you. Edging a true circle is fussy work. Bender board fights you, and a circle of mulch with no edge at all will bleed into the lawn within a season. Plenty of homeowners just cover a square or an octagon around the trampoline instead. A 26 by 26 foot square is 676 square feet, which is about 12.5 yards at 6 inches. That is roughly three extra yards for the corners you did not strictly need. Neither choice is wrong, but decide the shape before you order, not after the pile is sitting in the driveway.
Also worth knowing, trampolines sit up on legs and the frame itself takes up no depth. You are surfacing essentially the whole circle including the ground under the mat, so do not subtract the trampoline footprint the way you might mentally subtract a deck. Nothing is displacing mulch there.
Two maintenance notes for trampoline zones. Keep mulch out of the springs and off the spring pad, because it grinds and it is miserable to pick out by hand. And expect to rake the perimeter back into place after heavy use. Kids climbing on and off in the same two spots will push material outward, and a bare ring around the legs is the first sign you need a top off.
Add 15 to 20 Percent for Settling and Compaction
Mulch as it lands off the truck is fluffier than mulch after a month of rain, footsteps, and raking. Wood fiber in particular compresses noticeably. Spread exactly 6 inches on day one and you will measure less than 6 inches by the time school starts. Nothing has gone missing. The material simply packed down.
Standard practice is to order 15 to 20 percent above your calculated volume so the surface still sits close to your target depth once it settles in. Apply that to both examples above:
- The 20 by 30 rectangle calculated at 11.1 yards. Add 20 percent and you are at about 13.3, so order 13 or 14 yards.
- The round trampoline zone calculated at 9.8 yards. Add 20 percent and you are at about 11.8, so order 12 yards.
Settling is not the only reason to buy a cushion. Kick out is the other one. Slide exits and swing landing spots thin out fast because the same square foot of ground takes the same impact a few hundred times a week. Having material still on hand for the first top off, rather than ordering a fresh partial load in August, is worth the small amount of extra you buy in spring.
If you are using rubber mulch, the compaction issue is smaller than it is with wood fiber. Rubber does not break down and pack the same way. You still lose depth to scatter and displacement though, so a modest cushion on the order is still worth it. Just lean toward the lower end of the overage range instead of the higher end.
One more thing that protects your depth. A border around the use zone, whether that is landscape timbers, a poured curb, or a simple trench with a clean edge, holds material in place. Without any lip, mulch migrates into the surrounding lawn a little at a time and you find yourself buying more sooner than you planned. The border also gives you a fixed reference so you can see at a glance when the surface has dropped.
Set your maintenance expectations now. Plan to rake the high traffic spots level a few times a season, and check depth with a ruler once or twice a year, ideally in spring after winter has done its settling. Then just top off. You do not need to recalculate the whole zone from scratch every year, you only need to make up the difference in the spots that thinned.
Ordering It: Truck Loads, Bags, and What Actually Shows Up
Once you have a yardage number, the question becomes how it gets to your yard. A tandem dump truck load commonly runs in the 10 to 15 cubic yard range, which means a 6 inch playground job of the size in our examples is often a single delivery. Confirm capacity when you order, since trucks and site access vary. A tight driveway, a low branch, or a gate that will not clear a truck can change what is possible.
If you are thinking about hauling it yourself, do the reality check. A half ton pickup bed holds roughly a cubic yard of mulch by volume, and it is over its weight rating well before the bed is visually full, especially if the material is wet. Moving 13 yards means a dozen or more round trips plus loading and unloading each one. Bulk delivery exists precisely because that math does not work.
Bags are worth understanding for a different purpose. At 2 cubic feet per bag, there are 13.5 bags in a cubic yard. Bags at 3 cubic feet work out to nine per yard. So a 13 yard job is roughly 175 of the 2 cubic foot bags. That is a pallet situation, not a car trunk situation, and it is why bulk wins on anything playground sized. Bulk delivered material is also noticeably cheaper per yard than bagged, and there is far less plastic to haul off at the end.
Plan the drop before the truck arrives. Pick a dump spot on the driveway as close to the play area as you can get, keeping the wheelbarrow route short and reasonably flat. If you care about staining on concrete or pavers, lay down a tarp or a sheet of plywood first. Have a wide shovel, a mulch fork, and a stiff rake staged before the pile lands, because the job goes much faster when you are not hunting for tools with 13 yards sitting in your driveway.
Tell the yard what the mulch is for. Engineered wood fiber and rubber mulch are the two common playground surfacing choices, and they are not interchangeable with ordinary landscape bark. Playground rated wood fiber is processed and sized for impact attenuation and for staying put underfoot. Decorative bark nuggets are a different product with a different purpose. Ask specifically rather than ordering by color.
Last thing, round up. Suppliers sell in yard increments and sometimes half yard increments, so if your number lands at 11.8, order 12. Being a little long costs you a bit of shoveling and gives you material for the beds. Being short costs you a delivery fee and a weekend.

How deep should playground mulch be under a swing set?
Depth follows the fall height of the highest part a child can get onto, not the height of the swing seat. On a typical backyard A frame where nothing usable sits above 4 feet, 6 inches is the working number. A tall tower deck or a set that reaches over 7 feet pushes you into deeper surfacing, and the deeper spec applies across the whole shared zone rather than just the tall corner.
Check your depth in spring rather than midsummer. Winter freeze and thaw plus months of wet weather settle the surface, and a bed that measured right in September can read short in April.
How far past the equipment does the mulch need to extend?

How many 2 cubic foot bags equal a cubic yard?
Thirteen and a half. If your bags are 3 cubic feet, it is nine per yard. That conversion is genuinely handy for a mid season top off, when you need to bring one thin spot back up to depth and do not want a truck for it. For a full install it is a bad deal on both price and labor.
Do I need to remove the grass or sod first?
You do not have to, but the result is better if you do. Scalping the sod down and setting a border gives you honest depth from a solid base, and it keeps mulch from working its way down into the turf and disappearing.
If you spread straight over live grass, the material sinks as the grass underneath dies and breaks down. Your 6 inches on installation day quietly becomes noticeably less than 6 inches by midsummer, and you end up buying material a second time to get back to where you thought you already were.
Can I mix rubber mulch into existing wood mulch?
Better not to. Topping an old wood fiber bed with a thin layer of rubber does not give you either material's rated depth cleanly, so you cannot say with any confidence what the surface actually provides. It also makes future raking and removal a genuine mess, since the two materials separate at different rates and you cannot screen one out of the other.
Pick one material for the zone. If you want to switch from wood to rubber, plan on pulling the old material out, resetting the base, and starting fresh.
