Fill Dirt
Fill dirt is unscreened subsoil, mostly clay, sand, and silt, sold cheap for one job: bulking up volume and stabilizing grade. It is not topsoil and nothing should be planted directly in it. If you need to fill holes, build up a low yard, or backfill a foundation before capping with topsoil, this is the material to order.
What Fill Dirt Is Used For
Filling holes and low spots
Yards with old stump holes, sunken utility trenches, or uneven dips get built back up with fill dirt placed in 8 to 12 inch lifts, not dumped in one pass. Compacting each lift prevents soft, spongy pockets that sink later. Skipping this step is the single most common reason a filled area looks fine at first and then re-sinks months down the line after rain or foot traffic.
Best for sunken spots, old stump holes, uneven trenchesGrading and building up a lot
Before landscaping or building, lots often need raised or reshaped grade to control water flow and create a level base. Clean, screened fill dirt is worth the small upcharge near structures since it avoids debris and roots that cause uneven settling under future slabs or patios. Unscreened fill works fine for bulk grading farther from anything load bearing.
Best for pre landscaping grade changes, lot levelingBackfilling foundations and retaining walls
Compacted fill dirt gives footings, retaining walls, and utility trenches a stable base that will not decompose or shrink over time the way organic material does. It needs to go in properly compacted lifts to bear weight reliably. Drainage design still matters here, since dense fill sheds water slowly and can trap moisture against a foundation wall if graded wrong.
Best for foundation backfill, trench backfill, wall basesBerms, mounds, and building pads
Fill dirt holds its shape and volume for structural mounds and building pads without the shrinkage you get from compost or mulch based materials. It is the cheap bulk material that goes underneath, with a topsoil cap added afterward for anything that needs to grow. On its own it stays inert and stable for years.
Best for raised mounds, berms, sub grade building padsBrowse Fill Dirt Delivery by Location

How fill dirt is produced and graded
Fill dirt is not manufactured or blended like an aggregate. It is excavated subsoil, pulled from below the topsoil layer during construction digs, pond excavations, or quarry operations, then either sold as is or run through a screen to remove rocks, roots, and debris. Screened material gets labeled clean fill, though that term technically refers to environmental safety, meaning the soil is free of contaminants, not necessarily free of rocks. Composition depends entirely on the local pit it comes from, so color and texture vary by region, from reddish clay to gray sandy loam, and that variation has no bearing on quality. Because there is little to no organic matter in it, fill dirt will not support plant life and is not intended to. It is priced and sold purely as bulk volume for filling and grading, which is why it runs far cheaper per yard than topsoil or garden soil blends.
How to install and compact fill dirt properly
Never dump a full depth of fill dirt in one pour. Spread it in lifts of 8 to 12 inches, then compact each lift with a plate compactor, roller, or hand tamper before adding the next. This gets the material to roughly 90 to 95 percent of maximum dry density, which is what prevents future sinking. Skipping compaction leaves internal voids that collapse unevenly after rain or seasonal freeze thaw cycles, sometimes months after the job looked finished. On slopes, get the area seeded or covered quickly, since bare fill dirt sheds water fast and erodes before it has had time to settle naturally. If the finished use is a lawn or bed, cap the compacted fill with 4 to 8 inches of real topsoil rather than trying to grow anything in the subsoil directly.
How It Compares
Compared with topsoil. Fill dirt is dense subsoil with little organic matter, built for filling and structural stability. Topsoil is loose, nutrient rich, and formulated to grow plants. Use fill dirt for grading and load bearing volume, then cap it with topsoil for the top 4 to 8 inches wherever anything needs to grow.
Compared with road base or crushed stone. Road base is a manufactured, graded aggregate engineered for maximum compaction and drainage under driveways and pavers. Fill dirt is natural soil with inconsistent particle size and weaker drainage. Use fill dirt to bulk raise grade cheaply, then use road base as the structural top layer wherever vehicle loads or drainage control matter.
Ordering and Coverage
How much fill dirt do I need. One cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches, or 108 square feet at 3 inches. Divide 324 by your planned depth in inches to get square footage per yard, then divide your total area by that number. Add 10 to 25 percent extra on top of the calculated volume to cover compaction and settling, especially on deep fills or slopes.
How fill dirt is sold and delivered. Fill dirt is sold by the cubic yard and delivered in bulk dump truck loads, not bagged. Screened or clean fill costs a bit more than unscreened, run of the pit material. Because it is heavy, a full truckload can weigh well over a ton per yard, so confirm your delivery access can handle a loaded truck and that you have room to stage the pile before spreading.
