Mulch Calculator
Get Accurate Measurements in Minutes
Figuring out how much mulch you need shouldn't require advanced math skills or multiple trips to the store because you didn't buy enough the first time. A mulch calculator takes the guesswork out of your landscaping projects by giving you accurate measurements based on your specific garden beds, pathways, or play areas. Instead of eyeballing it at the garden center or ending up with half a bag too little (or three bags too many sitting in your garage), you'll know exactly what you need before you order.
At Mulch Mound, we built our calculator to make ordering landscaping materials as simple as possible. No more loading bags into your car, no more calling around to different suppliers trying to figure out bulk pricing, and no more wondering if you calculated correctly. You measure your space, the calculator does the work, and we deliver the right amount directly to your home. Accurate calculations mean you're not wasting money on excess material or scrambling to place a second order because you came up short.
Cincinnati's Unique Landscape
Our calculator offers two ways to measure your space, depending on what works best for you.
Trace from Satellite
lets you draw simple shapes (rectangles and circles) right on an aerial view of your property to estimate how much mulch you need. Even if your beds are curved or irregular, you can “box in” or “circle off” the space to get a quick guess-timate of the total area, perfect for multiple beds, winding borders, or several sections of your yard at once.
Manual Dimensions
Works if you already know your measurements or prefer to measure with a tape measure. You'll enter the length and width of each area, and the calculator converts those numbers into the total amount of material you need. This method is straightforward for rectangular or square beds, and you can add multiple areas together if you're working on different parts of your property.
For the most accurate results, measure carefully:
- Measure at the widest points of your garden beds
- Break irregular shapes into smaller, simpler sections
- If using satellite trace, zoom in close enough to draw precise boundaries
- Double-check your numbers before moving forward

How Much Mulch Do You Need?
For most garden applications, you'll want a mulch depth between 2 and 3 inches. This range provides good coverage for weed suppression and moisture retention without smothering your plants or wasting material. Flower beds typically do well with 2 to 3 inches, giving you enough thickness to block weeds while letting water soak through to the soil below.
Here's how depth works for different areas:
- Flower beds and around trees: 2-3 inches
- Pathways and decorative borders: 2 inches (especially for stone or gravel)
- Refreshing existing mulch: 1-2 inches to bring it back up to proper depth
- Playground areas: 6-8 inches for safety cushioning
One thing to remember
Organic mulches like wood chips and bark will settle and decompose over time. That 3-inch layer you put down in spring might be closer to 2 inches by the end of the season. You can either apply a slightly thicker initial layer or plan to add a fresh inch or two annually to maintain the depth. Stone and gravel don't settle the same way, so once you've got the right amount down, it stays put.

Mulch Mound: How We Started
We started Mulch Mound because we were tired of the old way of getting mulch, stone, and soil. Either you're cramming bags into your car at the garden center, or you're calling around to suppliers trying to decipher bulk pricing and coordinate delivery times that may or may not work with your schedule. There had to be a better way to handle something this straightforward.
Back in 2013, Alec and Tyler were broke college students running a scrappy landscaping business to pay tuition bills. They hired fellow students to help mow lawns and move mulch, learning pretty quickly what worked and what didn't. The business wasn't glamorous, but it taught them the value of hard work, teamwork, and keeping a sense of humor when equipment inevitably broke down at the worst possible moment. That hands-on experience showed them exactly where the pain points were in getting landscaping materials.
Today, we source quality materials from local suppliers and deliver directly to your home on a schedule that works for you. We focus on transparent pricing and making the entire process as straightforward as ordering anything else online. No loading your vehicle, no calling multiple suppliers, no coordinating delivery windows that don't fit your life. Yard work is hard enough without making the buying process complicated.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the mulch calculator?
The calculator gives you a solid estimate based on the measurements you provide. For the most accurate results, measure carefully and double-check your numbers before ordering. Keep in mind that irregular shapes or sloped areas might need slight adjustments, but the calculator will get you very close to what you actually need.
What if I order too much or too little?
The calculator is designed to give you accurate measurements, but if you're concerned about coming up short, you can always round up slightly. We recommend selecting a delivery date at least a day before you plan to spread the material, giving you time to assess coverage and place an additional order if needed.
How soon can I get my mulch delivered?
Delivery timeframes vary based on demand and your location, but we typically deliver within 24-48 hours. You can select your preferred delivery date during checkout. If you need same-day delivery, call us at 762-MULCH-ON as early as possible in the morning and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
