How much mulch do you need
For most garden beds, a depth between 2 and 3 inches is right. It blocks weeds and holds moisture without smothering plants or wasting material. Too thin and weeds find their way through. Too thick and you risk suffocating roots or keeping water from reaching the soil. Organic mulches like wood chips and bark settle and break down over the season, so a 3 inch layer laid in spring may be closer to 2 inches by fall.

How many bags of mulch are in a yard?
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals about 13 to 14 bags of 2 cubic feet, or 9 bags of 3 cubic feet. Past a yard or two, bulk delivery is usually far cheaper than bags.
How much area does a yard of mulch cover?
One cubic yard covers about 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, 108 square feet at 3 inches, and 81 square feet at 4 inches.
What if I order too much or too little?
If you are unsure, aim slightly high so you do not run short. Extra mulch keeps well for touch ups in beds and borders later in the season.
