How pine straw is baled and graded

Pine straw is raked or machine gathered from under stands of pine trees, then compressed and tied into bales rather than screened and ground like wood mulch. Grading is mostly by species and needle length. Longleaf pine produces the longest needles, 12 to 18 inches, with higher resin content, a deeper reddish color, and better interlocking strength, which makes it the preferred grade for slopes and erosion work. Slash pine falls in the middle at 6 to 10 inches. Loblolly, sometimes called short-needle straw, runs 4 to 6 inches and is the most widely available and least expensive grade, but it breaks down faster and offers less erosion resistance.
