Beckley sits at 2,405 feet on the Allegheny Plateau, and that altitude shows up in every yard here. Lots are carved into hillsides above the New River Gorge, so the silt loam left behind after decades of coal-era grading tends to be thin on the crowns and piled deep at the toe of every slope. With 43 inches of rain a year, that combination moves fast, which is why bulk stone for swales and check dams is as common a delivery as hardwood mulch in neighborhoods around Woodrow Wilson High School and out toward Sophia. We haul the same materials down US 19 to Oak Hill and south along I-77 to Princeton, where the growing season runs a little longer but the runoff behaves the same way. Beds that hold moisture without holding water are the whole game in Raleigh County.
