Get Started with Mulch Mound Today

Los Alamos sits on a series of narrow volcanic fingers, the mesa tops carved out of Bandelier tuff by canyons that drain toward the Rio Grande. Yards here are stitched onto sandy loam over compacted pumice and rock, which drains fast and holds almost none of the 18 inches of moisture the town gets in a year. Add 7,300 feet of elevation, brutal ultraviolet light, and pinon and ponderosa dropping needles across every bed, and the result is soil that begs for organic matter and mulch that has to stay put on a slope. We haul compost blends, screened topsoil, and crushed basalt and river rock up the hill to Los Alamos, down to White Rock above the canyon rim, and south through the Pojoaque valley into Santa Fe.
