Measure the low area in square feet, decide your depth, and work backward from there rather than guessing. For anything over a few yards, order delivered rather than trying to move it in a truck bed.

Most fill jobs around here get capped with a few inches of topsoil once the grade is set, especially if lawn or planting beds go on top. If you are backfilling around a foundation or pool wall, a layer of clean stone at the base can help with drainage before the fill goes in. We deliver all three separately so you can build the job in the right order.

Sandy loam around Annapolis drains fast, which sounds good but means fill placed in one thick pour will still settle unevenly over the first wet season. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each one with a plate compactor before adding the next. Skipping this step is the number one reason people end up with a sunken patch by their foundation a year later, right when they thought the job was done.
Fill dirt is not a growing medium, it is structural material, and treating it like topsoil is the most common mistake we see. If grass, shrubs, or a garden bed is going on top, cap the compacted fill with 4 to 6 inches of actual topsoil. Skip this step and you will fight poor drainage and weak growth for years, no matter how much fertilizer gets thrown at it.
If your project needs both fill and topsoil, order them as separate deliveries rather than trying to blend them on site, since mixing wastes the topsoil's value. Time the fill delivery for after any excavation or demolition is finished, so you are not paying to move material twice. This is especially relevant on tighter downtown Annapolis lots where truck access and staging space are both limited.
Annapolis sits at just 39 feet of elevation with sandy loam soil that drains fast but also settles unevenly once you start digging near the water table. A lot of the fill work we deliver for goes toward backfilling around crawl spaces and pool installs on older lots near the Naval Academy and downtown, where original grading was never great to begin with. Sandy loam compacts differently than clay, so lifts matter more here, not less. This is structural material for building up ground, not something to plant into directly.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
