Fill dirt is a base layer, so most jobs finish with a few inches of topsoil on top wherever grass or plants need to grow. If you are backfilling around a foundation or a pool, a layer of crushed stone underneath for drainage is worth considering before the fill goes in. We deliver both alongside fill dirt so you can stage the whole job in one trip.
Service area
Do not dump fill dirt in one deep pour and walk away. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each one with a plate compactor or hand tamper before adding the next layer. Skipping this step is the number one reason Burlington yards develop sunken patches two winters later, once frost heave and spring thaw work through loose, uncompacted soil. It takes longer up front but it is the difference between a stable yard and a redo.
Fill dirt is not for planting directly into. It lacks the organic matter and structure that roots and drainage need, and Burlington's clay loam is already tight on drainage as it is. Always cap finished fill with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil before seeding grass or planting beds. Skipping the cap layer means whatever you plant will struggle in dense subsoil, especially through a wet Vermont spring.
If you are backfilling a large area, like an old pool or a big grade change near Lake Champlain's shoreline, price out fill dirt and topsoil together rather than trying to stretch topsoil to do a structural job. Fill dirt costs less per yard because it skips the screening and amendment that topsoil gets, so using it for the bulk of the depth and saving topsoil for the top few inches is the more efficient way to build up ground.
Burlington sits on clay loam that already drains slowly, so a lot of yards near the lake and downslope from Church Street Marketplace end up with soggy low corners every spring melt. Fill dirt is how you raise that ground so water moves off instead of pooling against a foundation. With Vermont's freeze thaw cycle, especially with frost setting in by early October and not letting go until mid May, poorly compacted fill will heave and settle unevenly, so getting the base right matters more here than in milder climates. Most of the calls we get are foundation backfill, pool removal, and building up a low yard before a landscaping project starts.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
