Most structural fill jobs here go 6 to 12 inches deep, so a 200 square foot low spot at 6 inches needs around 4 cubic yards, and doubling the depth roughly doubles the yardage. One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Most fill dirt jobs finish with a cap of topsoil once the grade is where it needs to be, especially if sod, planting beds, or turf are going in over it. Some Carlsbad customers also order a layer of decomposed granite or gravel on top near pool decks and walkways where drainage matters more than growing anything. Fill dirt does the heavy lifting, the finish material on top is what people actually see and walk on.
Service area
Do not dump fill dirt in one deep pour and walk away. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each layer before adding the next, ideally with a plate compactor rather than just foot traffic or a hose. In Carlsbad's sandy ground, uncompacted fill will keep settling for one to two years, showing up as sunken spots near pool coping, patio edges, or foundation lines exactly where you cannot afford movement.
A common mistake is treating fill dirt as topsoil and planting straight into it. It is subsoil, low in organic matter and structure, so grass and plants struggle in it directly. Cap the compacted fill with 4 to 6 inches of real topsoil before seeding, sodding, or planting beds. Skipping this step is the number one reason new lawns over fill areas come in patchy or yellow within a season.
If you are raising a large area, order fill dirt for the bulk of the depth and save topsoil for just the top few inches where roots actually live. This mixed approach costs less per cubic yard delivered than filling the entire depth with topsoil, and it performs better structurally since fill dirt compacts more predictably under decks, patios, and foundations than a lighter topsoil blend would.
Carlsbad sits at low elevation near the coast with sandy soil that shifts and settles more than clay ever would. That makes fill dirt compaction non negotiable here, loose fill over sand will keep sinking around pool decks and foundation lines for years if it is not built up in lifts. Around LEGOLAND and the surrounding neighborhoods, a lot of the fill work we see is grading lots that were never quite level to begin with, or raising areas that pond after the rare heavy rain. Zone 10b means there is no frost heave to worry about, but settling from irrigation and gravity is still the real enemy.
Fill dirt is inorganic subsoil sold for volume and grade, not for growing. Small rocks and bits of stick or root are normal in the mix. It compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
