Most hardscape jobs around here pair this sand with paver base or crushed stone underneath and polymeric sand or gravel edging on top. If you are working near the river where soil holds moisture longer, a compacted gravel base under the sand layer helps keep everything from shifting through freeze thaw cycles. Cement and mortar mix are the other common add on for anyone doing brick or block work.
Do not confuse this washed mason type sand with concrete sand for structural bedding work. It is finer and rounder, which is exactly what makes mortar workable and joint fill pack into paver gaps, but that same fineness means it does not compact as firm as concrete sand under heavy loads. If you are setting a paver patio that will see vehicle traffic, ask about a coarser bedding sand or compacted stone base instead.
A common mistake in this area is filling paver joints with dry sand right before a spring rain and assuming it will settle in place. Davenport's spring rain events wash uncompacted joint sand out fast, especially on any slope toward the river. Sweep sand into joints, then lightly compact or wet it with a fine spray before the next storm rolls through, and plan on a second top off pass a few weeks later.
If your project is mortar mixing for brick repair near an older Davenport structure, keep the sand covered and dry until you use it, damp sand throws off your water to mix ratio and weakens the bond. For pool base work, a thin leveled sand layer under the liner is enough, do not over order, most residential pool bases only need a shallow 1 inch pass rather than a full 2 inch depth.
Davenport sits on silt loam along the Mississippi, soil that already holds a lot of fine particles and drains slowly when it is wet. That is one reason masons here lean on sand rather than native soil for bedding and mortar work, it gives you a predictable, controlled base instead of whatever the river bottom left behind. With winters that push past the October frost date and freeze thaw cycles common through a Zone 5b season, a properly bedded paver joint matters more here than in milder climates, loose or organic material under a patio will heave. Sand also drains fast around pool bases, which keeps water from pooling against a structure through Davenport's wetter spring stretch.
Masonry sand is washed and finely screened, the right choice for mortar work, paver joints, and sandboxes. Fill sand is coarser and less processed, better suited to leveling, bedding pipe, and filling low spots.
For pavers, screed a 1 inch sand bed over a compacted base rather than using sand to fix deep grade problems. A thin, even bed locks pavers in place. A thick one shifts underfoot.
Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
