One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Landscape fabric underneath is what makes this a decade-long install instead of a weed patch by next summer. A lot of Dover jobs pair rock borders with mulch beds closer to the house where people still want plants that benefit from organic matter breaking down. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the rock from migrating into the lawn during mowing.

In Dover's sandy loam, skip landscaping fabric alone and use a layer of paper backed weed barrier under the rock near any bed that used to be lawn. Sandy soil lets grass roots and weed seed travel sideways under thin fabric faster than in clay. The extra barrier layer costs little compared to redoing a bed two summers later when quackgrass pushes through.
The most common mistake locally is installing rock right up against foundation brick without a gap. Dover's older homes near the Green were built with softer mortar, and moisture wicking up through rock piled against the wall speeds up spalling. Leave a few inches of clearance and slope the rock bed away from the foundation.
If you're doing a large front yard bed, order rock in bulk cubic yards rather than bagged stone. Bagged material runs small and inconsistent for coverage math, and you'll make more trips than expected. A single bulk delivery scheduled at checkout also means one clean staging pile instead of a dozen torn bags in the yard.
Dover sits on sandy loam that already drains well, so rock does not sit in mud after a fall storm off the Delaware Bay. That drainage makes it a good match for beds near downspouts and foundations around the city's older homes near Legislative Mall and the newer builds out toward Dover Motor Speedway. Because it is a one time install rather than a seasonal refresh, it holds up through zone 7b winters without breaking down like mulch does. It does trap leaves in the fall, so beds under trees need occasional blowing out.

River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
