Landscape fabric goes down first and does most of the long-term work, keeping this a decade-long install instead of a losing battle with weeds. Edging, whether steel, aluminum, or paver strip, keeps rock from migrating into the lawn during Eau Claire's heavy spring snowmelt. Some customers pair a rock border with mulch in the planting beds themselves, since rock does not feed soil the way organic material does.
Service area
Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap the seams by at least 6 inches. In sandy loam soil like ours, skipping fabric means rock slowly works its way into the ground over a couple seasons, and by year three you are picking stones out of dirt instead of standing on a clean bed. The fabric is what makes this a true one time install instead of a repeat project.
The most common mistake here is spreading rock right up against tree trunks or perennial crowns. Rock holds heat and moisture differently than mulch, and against Eau Claire's sandy loam that can mean roots baking in summer or staying too wet in a wet spring. Leave a few inches of bare mulch or soil buffer around anything living, and reserve straight rock coverage for foundation lines and open groundcover areas.
Rock and mulch pair well on the same property instead of competing. Use rock where drainage and permanence matter most, foundations, downspout aprons, high-traffic side yards, and keep mulch in planting beds where soil still needs organic matter.
