One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Landscape fabric underneath is what makes this a decade long install instead of a weed patch, so budget for that before the rock goes down. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the stone from migrating into the lawn, especially useful along Elgin's sloped yards near the river. If you're covering large areas, some homeowners mix in a mulched planting bed for anything that actually needs organic matter, since rock alone starves plant roots over time.

Lay landscape fabric before the rock, not after, and overlap seams by at least 6 inches. In Elgin's silt loam, skipping fabric means the rock slowly sinks into the soil over a few winters as freeze thaw cycles work the ground, and within a few years you are pulling stone out of mud instead of setting it on a clean base.
Rock traps fallen leaves instead of breaking them down, and Elgin has plenty of mature trees dropping leaves through October before first frost. Plan on blowing or raking leaves out of rock beds each fall, otherwise they mat down, hold moisture against the stone, and you get weed seeds germinating in that trapped organic debris by spring.
Order the full quantity in one delivery rather than splitting into two smaller loads, since matching rock color and size across separate batches is not guaranteed. If you are pairing rock beds with mulched planting areas elsewhere on the property, schedule both deliveries the same day to save on separate trips and keep the whole job moving in one weekend.
Elgin's silt loam drains slower than sand or gravelly soils, so low spots near downspouts and foundations stay soggy well into May. Decorative rock over fabric solves that by shedding water instead of absorbing it, which matters with our wet springs and the freeze thaw cycle that runs from October frost to mid May thaw.
