One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Most fill dirt jobs finish with a cap of topsoil once the grade is set, since fill is not meant to grow anything on its own. If the finished area gets foot traffic or drainage matters, a layer of sand or gravel underneath before backfilling can help with settling. Mulch or sod usually comes last, once the structural work underneath is done and compacted.
Fill dirt is not something you dump and walk away from. Place it in lifts of 6 to 8 inches and compact each layer before adding the next, especially in Gainesville's sandy soil where loose fill settles unevenly over time. Skipping compaction is the number one reason people end up with a sunken patch a year later, right where the pool deck or shed pad used to be level.
A common mistake is trying to grow grass or plants directly in fill dirt. It is subsoil, stripped of organic matter, and it will not support healthy turf on its own. Cap it with several inches of topsoil once your grade is set and compacted, then seed or sod on top of that. Skipping the topsoil cap is why some fill jobs end up with bare, hard patches that never green up.
If you are filling a large low spot, it is worth pairing fill dirt with a load of coarse sand or crushed base underneath in areas that will see heavy foot or vehicle traffic, since Gainesville's native sandy soil alone will not always give you a stable base. Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
