Landscape fabric underneath is what makes this a one time install instead of an annual chore, so budget for it if you do not already have a barrier down. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the rock from migrating into the lawn, which matters more here given how sandy Gulfport soil shifts underfoot. A lot of local jobs pair rock borders with mulched planting beds nearby, using rock where drainage and low maintenance matter most.
Service area
Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, not after. In Gulfport's sandy soil, skipping fabric means the rock slowly sinks and mixes with sand over a couple of seasons, and you lose the clean look within a year or two. Fabric also blocks weeds from pushing up through gaps, which matters here since the growing season runs long in zone 9a and weeds do not really stop.
Rock traps leaves and pine straw instead of breaking them down like mulch does. Plan on blowing or raking debris out of rock beds every few weeks during fall, especially near live oaks or pines common around Gulfport properties, or the bed will look dirty even though the rock itself never degrades.
Order slightly more than your calculated total if the bed borders a foundation or downspout, since those spots often need a deeper 3 inch layer to handle runoff. Combining a rock border with mulched planting beds elsewhere on the same property lets you split a delivery and cut down on separate trips.

Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
