One cubic yard of fill dirt covers about 54 square feet at a 6 inch depth, so a 10 by 10 foot low spot needs roughly two yards at that depth, or closer to four yards if you're building up a full 12 inches. Measure the area you're raising and the depth you need before ordering, since fill dirt is heavy at 1.3 tons per yard and overordering gets expensive fast.

Most fill jobs in Huntsville get capped with a few inches of topsoil once the grade is set, since fill dirt alone won't support grass or plant roots. If the finished area needs planting, order topsoil for the top layer and consider mulch or gravel for edges and drainage paths once the grading is done.

Huntsville's clay subsoil means water doesn't move through fast, so when you're filling a low spot, don't just dump and walk away. Place it in lifts of 6 to 8 inches and compact each one with a plate compactor or even foot traffic on smaller jobs before adding the next layer. Skip this step and the whole area keeps settling for a year or two, especially through wet winters, leaving you with a dip right back where you started.
A common mistake is trying to plant directly into fill dirt. It's subsoil, stripped of the organic matter and nutrients that support root growth, so grass seed or new shrubs will struggle or fail outright. Always cap finished fill with several inches of real topsoil before seeding or planting anything, even if the fill looks fine on the surface.
If you're both raising grade and improving drainage, it often makes sense to order fill dirt for the bulk of the depth and finish with a thinner topsoil layer, rather than paying for topsoil the whole way down since it costs more per yard and does nothing structurally that fill dirt doesn't already do. Save the topsoil budget for the layer that actually needs to support growth.
Huntsville sits on heavy clay that drains slowly and shifts with wet and dry cycles, which is exactly why so many yards here develop low spots, soggy corners, and settling around foundations. Fill dirt gives you a stable base to correct that grade before you cap it with topsoil or sod. With elevation around 600 feet and a good number of homes built into rolling terrain near the mountains, regrading around decks, pools, and foundation walls is a common call we get. This is not a growing medium, it is the structural layer underneath one.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
