We got 3 yards of the gardening top soil. It was great quality, not many chunks and seems good for growing, just waiting for all my plants to love it.
We had more than enough soil to fill a raised bed we made and landscaped around a patio. I do wish we could do less than 3 yds delivered but I understand the limitations.
My only concern was we requested it on the top left of our driveway since we had mulch on the other side, they ended up pouring it on top of the mulch (it was covered with a tarp so not ruined) making it difficult to complete our landscaping in a timely fashion.
Two to three inches covers most mulch needs—weed control, moisture retention, and a clean look. Trace your project area with our satellite tool to see estimated yardage. For Indianapolis's silt loam ground, this depth also helps improve structure over time.
Mulch vs. No Mulch: The Difference
Central Indiana weather arrives from every direction bringing Gulf humidity lake moisture and Canadian cold across the same year. Mulch around beds provides consistent protection against this four season variety.

Best Mulch Choice for Indianapolis Lawns
Most yards in the Indianapolis area sit on Clay type of soil. Compaction is the big challenge, drainage can be slow, and the soil may stay wet longer after storms.
Hardwood Mulch
A consistent hardwood mulch layer keeps clay from baking hard, limits runoff, and slowly feeds the soil as it breaks down.
Complete Your Outdoor Mulch Project
Ready to do more than mulch in Indianapolis? Soil improves planting beds from the ground up. Stone handles borders, paths, and drainage zones. Order together.
Cedar and cypress mulch naturally resist insects and decay significantly longer than standard hardwood mulch. They cost more upfront but need replacing less often, especially valuable in Indianapolis's humid continental climate conditions.
Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Cocoa shell mulch smells wonderfully like chocolate and looks beautiful in beds, but it is highly toxic to dogs who may eat it. Avoid it completely if pets have any access to your yard or garden areas.
Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Artillery fungus appears as tiny black dots on siding, fences, and cars parked near mulch beds. It is nearly impossible to remove once attached. Avoid it by using bark mulch instead of wood chips near structures.

Answer
How much mulch do I need?
A yard of mulch handles around 100 square feet when spread 3 inches thick. Calculate your total area, check our sizing tool, and round up.
Answer
Does mulch help with drainage?
Not directly, but it stops crusting that causes runoff. Indianapolis yards benefit from better water infiltration through mulched beds.
Answer
Is mulch safe for pets?
Most mulch is pet-friendly. Avoid cocoa mulch (toxic to dogs) and check for pesticide treatments. Natural hardwood and cedar are safe.
Answer
What type of mulch works best here?
For Indianapolis's silt loam, hardwood mulch is a solid choice. It breaks down to improve structure—helpful when you're dealing with glacial till clay.
Answer
Will mulch wash away on slopes?
On slopes, pick shredded mulch that knits together. Given Indianapolis's 42-inch yearly rainfall, chip mulch will migrate.
Answer
Does mulch prevent weeds?
Mulch reduces weeds significantly but doesn't stop all of them. Three inches blocks enough light to prevent most germination.
Answer
Will mulch attract termites?
Mulch itself doesn't bring termites in, but it provides habitat. Leave a gap between mulch and any wood structures including foundations.
The Unique Landscape of Indianapolis
Mulch is the quickest upgrade for cleaner, lower‑maintenance beds. Indianapolis freeze–thaw and spring rain can beat up beds if materials aren’t refreshed. In Indianapolis, Indiana, mulch is a simple way to sharpen edges, cut weeding time, and protect plants through the season. It reduces weeds, keeps moisture steadier, and makes plantings pop. Refresh lightly as needed and keep mulch away from trunks. Pick the color and texture you like—mulch is one of the easiest ways to change the vibe. Delivery lets you finish the project in one go—no hauling, no repeat trips.
