One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Most fill jobs finish with a layer of topsoil on top, since fill dirt is a structural base and not something anything will grow in on its own. If the finished area is going to be lawn or garden, plan on 4 to 6 inches of topsoil over the compacted fill. Some Keene properties also pair fill with crushed stone for drainage layers under patios or sheds before the fill goes in.
Fill dirt should go down in lifts of 6 to 8 inches, with each layer compacted before the next goes on top. Skipping this step is the single most common reason people see sinking or uneven settling a year or two later, especially in Keene's glacial till where the base soil already holds water and shifts with freeze thaw cycles. A hand tamper works for small areas, but rent a plate compactor for anything larger than a walkway.
Do not confuse fill dirt with topsoil or garden soil. Fill dirt is subsoil, screened of major debris but not intended to grow anything in. If the finished area needs grass, plants, or a garden bed, cap the compacted fill with 4 to 6 inches of real topsoil. Skipping this step means whatever you plant will struggle in dense, nutrient poor subsoil.
If you are building up a large area, order fill dirt for the bulk of the depth and save topsoil for just the top few inches, since fill dirt is typically the more economical material for structural volume. This two material approach costs less than filling the entire depth with topsoil, and it performs better structurally since fill dirt compacts more predictably under weight.
Keene sits on glacial till, a dense mix of clay, sand, and stone that does not drain fast and does not compact evenly on its own. That is exactly why fill dirt gets used here so often, whether it is leveling a yard that pools water after spring melt or building a stable base near a foundation before the frost sets in again. Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
