Most rock beds in Killeen go down over landscape fabric, so pick that up if you don't already have it on hand. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the rock from migrating into the lawn, especially where clay soil shifts a little through wet and dry cycles. If you're mixing rock with planting beds nearby, a load of garden soil for those pockets keeps the two systems separate and easier to maintain.
Service area
Before you order, knock a few inches into your bed with a shovel. Killeen's clay caliche often has a compacted layer just below the surface that needs breaking up before fabric goes down, otherwise water pools under the rock instead of draining through. Loosen that layer first, lay fabric, then spread rock at 2 to 3 inches. Skipping this step is the main reason rock beds here end up holding standing water after a hard rain.
The biggest mistake we see is skipping edging. Without a physical barrier, rock migrates into St. Augustine lawns during mowing and irrigation runoff, and once it's mixed into turf it's nearly impossible to fully remove. Set steel or aluminum edging before the rock goes down, not after. It also keeps the caliche soil from creeping up into the rock layer as it expands and contracts through Killeen's wet winters and dry summers.
Because this is a one time install rather than an annual refresh like mulch, it pays to size the order right the first time rather than buying light and reordering later, since matching stone color and size across two separate loads can be inconsistent. Order slightly generous, especially for beds near downspouts where rock tends to settle and disperse faster than in flat, undisturbed areas.
Killeen's clay caliche soil sheds water fast when it's baked hard by summer heat, then turns slick when the rain finally comes, which makes organic mulch break down unevenly and wash around in low spots. Rock does not care. Laid over fabric it sits on top of that hardpan and drains through instead of soaking in, which suits the front yard beds and foundation lines you see all over Boomtown, USA. It also holds up against the wind that comes across this stretch of central Texas, where lighter mulches blow into the street. The tradeoff is that it will not feed the caliche or loosen it over time, so plants that need real soil improvement should get a bed of their own.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
