Fill dirt is almost always the first layer, not the last, so plan on capping it with topsoil if grass, beds, or anything else needs to grow on top. If you're building up a large area, a load of crushed stone or gravel underneath in wet-prone spots can help with drainage before you fill and compact. Mulch comes later, once the grade is set and planting beds are in.
Place fill dirt in lifts no deeper than 6 to 8 inches and compact each one before adding the next. This matters more than people think, because uncompacted fill keeps settling for years, and on Levittown's sandy loam base that settling shows up fast around foundations and patio edges. A plate compactor rented for an afternoon will save you from a sunken spot showing up next spring.
The most common mistake we see is treating fill dirt like topsoil and trying to plant directly into it. Fill dirt is subsoil, screened of debris but stripped of the organic matter that plants need. Always cap finished, compacted fill with 4 to 6 inches of real topsoil before seeding or planting, or you'll end up with patchy grass and wonder why nothing takes root.
If your project needs both fill and topsoil, order them as separate deliveries rather than trying to blend them yourself, since the compaction schedule for each is different. Fill goes down first in compacted lifts, then topsoil goes on top uncompacted, loose enough for roots to establish.
