Fill dirt is not something you dump and walk away from. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each one with a plate compactor or hand tamper before adding the next. Skip this in Manchester's sandy loam and the load will settle unevenly over a wet spring, leaving a sunken patch right where you least want one, usually next to a foundation or under a new patio.

The most common mistake we see is treating fill dirt like topsoil and planting straight into it. It has no organic matter and compacts hard by design, which is exactly wrong for roots. Always cap finished fill with 4 to 6 inches of real topsoil before seeding or planting, even if the fill layer looks dark and fine grained.

If you are filling a large low area, pair fill dirt with a thinner cap of topsoil rather than using topsoil for the whole depth. Fill dirt does the structural work of raising grade at lower cost, and topsoil only needs to cover the top few inches where plants actually grow, so you are not paying premium material for depth nobody roots into.
Grading and Filling in Manchester
Manchester sits at a modest 266 feet with sandy loam that drains fast, which is good for lawns but means low spots do not fill themselves in with runoff sediment the way clay areas do. A lot of the fill work we see here is backfilling around pool installs and foundation work, or bringing a soggy corner of yard up to grade before a shed pad or patio goes in. With first frost around October 1 and last frost near May 10, the window for compacting and grading without frozen ground runs roughly seven months, so timing lifts before the ground locks up matters.
What Clean Fill Is
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill Dirt vs Topsoil
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Compact in Lifts
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
