One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Landscape fabric underneath is what makes rock last for a decade instead of sinking into the clay loam beneath it. Edging, whether steel or paver, keeps rock from migrating into grass over time and gives the bed a defined line. Many Mansfield customers pair rock beds near the house with mulch further out in planting areas that need organic matter.

In Mansfield's clay loam, skip the plastic sheeting under rock beds and use woven landscape fabric instead. Plastic traps moisture against clay soil that already drains slowly, which can pool water and rot plant roots at the bed's edge. Woven fabric lets water pass through while still blocking weeds, and it holds up better through our freeze-thaw winters without tearing or degrading under the rock's weight.
The biggest mistake with rock beds here is installing right before leaf season without a plan. Mansfield's shade trees drop heavily from mid-October through November, and leaves settle into rock and are nearly impossible to rake out cleanly. If you're installing in fall, do it before Oct 10 and blow leaves off weekly through the drop, or wait until after the trees are bare.
Rock is a one time cost that does not repeat like mulch does every spring, so it's worth spending on a proper fabric base and edging the first time rather than skimping and redoing it in three years. If you're covering a large area, consider mixing rock near the foundation with mulch in planting beds further out, since that keeps cost down while still using rock where it earns its keep against the house.
Mansfield's clay loam drains slowly, especially through the wet stretch before the April 30 last frost, and rock over landscape fabric solves that by keeping foot traffic out of soggy beds while water still moves through. Around the Reformatory neighborhoods and older Mansfield lots with mature trees, rock beds are common near foundations where owners want a clean edge without mulch that has to be replaced every year. It also handles freeze-thaw cycling through zone 6a winters without breaking down or washing out. The tradeoff is it collects leaves in fall and does nothing for soil health, so it works best where you are not trying to feed plants.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
