One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Most fill jobs finish with a few inches of topsoil capping the fill dirt, since fill is a structural base and nothing grows well directly in it. If you are building up a bed or lawn area, ordering topsoil alongside the fill in the same delivery keeps the project moving without a second trip. Compactable gravel is worth adding too if the fill is going under a patio, shed pad, or anything that needs to stay stable.
Service area
Do not dump fill dirt in one deep pour. Place it in lifts of 6 to 8 inches and compact each layer before adding the next, whether with a plate compactor or by wheel-rolling it with equipment. Skipping this step is the number one reason people call us back a year later asking why their yard has a sunken patch. In Norwich's sandy loam, water moves through fast, so uncompacted fill settles unevenly as it drains and consolidates over the following seasons.
Fill dirt is not a growing medium, it is subsoil screened of debris, so nothing will thrive planted directly into it. Cap it with 4 to 6 inches of real topsoil before seeding a lawn or planting beds. A common mistake is finishing grade with fill and expecting grass to take, then wondering why it comes in patchy. Budget the topsoil layer into your plan from the start rather than as an afterthought.
If you are backfilling around a foundation or pool wall, order a bit more than your calculated volume since compaction reduces the final height by 10 to 20 percent. It is more efficient to slightly overorder fill in one delivery than to schedule a second small load later for a gap you did not account for. Pairing your fill order with topsoil or gravel in the same delivery window also saves a separate delivery fee down the line.
Norwich sits at low elevation with sandy loam soil that drains fast but also settles unevenly around foundations and near grade changes close to Yantic Falls and the river corridor. Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
