Complete Your Outdoor Soil Project
Soil gets your beds ready for planting. Add mulch on top to protect roots and hold moisture in silt loam ground. Stone finishes Portland paths and edging.
Fill dirt and topsoil are completely different products for different purposes. Fill is infertile subsoil for grading and structural support. Topsoil is the fertile surface layer for growing plants.
A cubic yard of topsoil weighs roughly 2,000 to 2,400 pounds depending on moisture content at delivery time. Wet soil can weigh 30 percent more than dry soil of the same volume.
Do not mix topsoil and mulch together thinking it creates better planting mix for beds. It does not work that way. Mulch belongs on top of soil as a surface layer, not mixed in.
The Unique Landscape of Portland
Portland, Oregon planting jobs are simpler when soil spreads evenly and settles without big clumps. Spring rain and freeze–thaw cycles can leave beds lumpy and wash out low spots. Use it for lawn patch prep, bed refreshes, and filling where old mulch was removed. If you’re seeding, smooth the surface and water lightly to lock in soil-to-seed contact. With delivery, you can focus on grading and planting instead of hauling bags.
