Fill dirt does the heavy structural work, but if anything on top needs to grow, cap it with a few inches of topsoil before seeding or sodding. For drainage around foundations or low spots that still puddle, some jobs pair fill dirt with a layer of gravel underneath to help water move away from the structure.
Service area
Fill dirt is a structural material, not something you dump in one deep pile and walk away from. Place it in lifts of 6 to 8 inches and compact each layer before adding the next, whether that means a plate compactor or just wetting and tamping by hand for a small job. Skip this step and Salisbury's freeze thaw cycle will find every soft spot over the next couple winters, leaving you with sunken patches by the following spring.
The most common mistake we see is people using fill dirt as a growing medium, spreading it out and seeding right into it. It is subsoil with the topsoil and organic matter screened out, so grass and plants struggle in it. Always cap finished fill with 3 to 4 inches of real topsoil before you plant anything, even if it costs you an extra delivery.
If you are backfilling around a pool or foundation, order fill dirt and topsoil as separate deliveries rather than trying to blend them yourself. It is more efficient to place the structural fill first, compact it properly, then bring in topsoil only for the final finish layer where roots actually need to sit.
Salisbury's sandy loam drains well on its own, but low spots and old pool excavations still need real structural fill, not more topsoil piled on top of soft ground. With a growing zone of 7b and frost reaching down through mid November to April, unsettled fill will heave and sink over a winter freeze thaw cycle if it is not compacted right. This is why we sell fill dirt as its own product, separate from topsoil, for jobs where the goal is raising elevation or backfilling, not planting.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
