Fill dirt is a structural base, not something to plant into, so most jobs cap it with a few inches of topsoil once the grade is set. If the area will see foot traffic or drainage flow, some customers also order a layer of crushed stone underneath low, wet spots before filling. Mulch or sod goes on last, once the topsoil is down and settled.

Never dump fill dirt in one deep layer and walk away. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each one before adding the next, especially over San Antonio's clay and caliche, which already shifts with moisture. Skipping compaction is why yards develop dips and low spots again a year or two later, right where the fill was poured thickest.
Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Fill dirt is not a growing medium, it is base material. If sod, beds, or grass are going in eventually, cap the compacted fill with several inches of real topsoil first. Grass roots and most plants struggle in raw subsoil, especially with San Antonio's alkaline clay content, so skipping the topsoil cap usually shows up as patchy or stalled growth within a season.

If you are backfilling a large area, like around a new pool shell or a big grade change, it is worth pairing fill dirt with a load of crushed stone for the lowest, wettest sections before filling over it. That gives water somewhere to go instead of sitting against the clay, which is one of the more common callback issues we see in this area after backfill jobs.
Grading and Filling in San Antonio
San Antonio sits on heavy clay and caliche that does not drain well and shifts as it wets and dries through the year. That movement is exactly why low spots keep coming back near foundations, patios, and pool decks even after a quick fix. Fill dirt gives you a stable base to build grade back up before anything else goes on top. Around here it gets used a lot for backfill after pool installs and for leveling yards that slope toward the house.
What Clean Fill Is
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill Dirt vs Topsoil
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Compact in Lifts
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
