First time purchase from Mulch Mound!! First what I liked! Easy to order online and straight forward pricing and delivery. The driver was on time and courteous and delivered my Mulch exactly where I requested! The product is of good quality and comparable to others I have purchased from before. Now what I DID’NT LIKE! I have been mulching the same house and yard for almost 20 years. I always order the same amount and don’t have any issues with covering the same area but this year I fell about a yard short. I was home when the mulch was delivered and when the driver dumped it I noticed that it seemed a bit less than I was used to. I didn’t apply it any thicker than usual and probably a bit thinner than usual because I was worried about running out.
Landscape fabric underneath is what makes this a decade-long install instead of a weed farm, so order enough to cover the full bed area before the rock goes down. Steel or aluminum edging keeps the stone from migrating into the lawn, especially where sandy soil shifts with heavy rain. A lot of customers pair rock beds with mulch in the planting islands nearby, using rock for the low-maintenance zones and mulch where they actually want soil life.
Service area
In sandy soil like the kind under most Silver Springs Shores yards, skip skimping on fabric. Overlap seams by at least 6 inches and pin every 18 inches, because loose fabric lets rock work down into the sand within a season, and then you are hand sifting stone out of dirt instead of enjoying a clean bed. A tight fabric layer is what actually makes the coverage math above hold up over years, not months.
Leaves and pine needles collect in rock beds and do not break down the way they would in mulch, they just sit on top and rot into a dark film. Plan to blow or rake rock beds out a couple times a year, especially in fall, or the stone will look dingy long before it actually wears out. This is the main maintenance trade off for a material that otherwise needs almost nothing.
Rock is a one time cost over its lifespan since it does not need annual refresh like mulch does, so it evens out even though the upfront yardage costs more. Order it for the beds you are tired of maintaining every year, foundations, downspout aprons, side yards, and keep mulch in the beds where plants actually benefit from organic matter breaking down into the soil.
Sandy soil around The Shores drains fast, which means organic mulch disappears into it faster than most homeowners expect, but rock does not care. Laid over fabric, it stays put through Marion County's heavy summer rain and holds up near Silver Springs State Park style landscaping where a low-maintenance, natural stone look fits the surroundings. It is a solid choice for downspout aprons and foundation beds where sandy ground tends to erode. Because zone 9a has no real winter dieback, rock beds here look the same in January as they do in July.

River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
