One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.
Most paver and patio jobs that call for this sand also need a base layer of crushed stone underneath it, since sand alone will not stabilize on silty clay soil. If you are doing mortar work, you will likely also want cement on hand before the sand arrives. Pool installers often order this alongside gravel for the surrounding drainage bed.
For mortar mixing in this climate, keep your sand covered or tarped once delivered, especially into fall as Sioux Falls approaches its first frost around September 30. Damp, partially frozen sand throws off your mortar ratios and can weaken a cure that is already fighting cold temperatures. If you are working late in the season, mix smaller batches and work faster than you would in July.
A common mistake with paver joints is over filling and then compacting, which just pushes sand back out. Sweep it in dry, in thin passes, and use a plate compactor between passes rather than one heavy pass at the end. Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
