Landscape fabric underneath is what makes rock a decade long groundcover instead of a weed patch, so plan on that as a base layer before delivery. Edging, whether metal, paver, or concrete curbing, keeps the stone from migrating into the lawn during heavy summer storms. If any part of the bed still holds plants that want organic matter, keep a separate mulch zone rather than mixing the two.

In West Palm Beach's sandy base, skip skipping the fabric. Without a barrier, rock will slowly work its way down into loose native sand over a couple seasons and you will be topping off the bed sooner than expected. Lay heavy landscape fabric, overlap the seams, and pin it every few feet before the rock goes down, especially on beds that get foot traffic or hose spray from irrigation heads.
The most common mistake here is piling rock straight against stucco or siding. With our humid, rainy pattern, splashback moisture sitting against a wall invites mildew and pest activity.
