I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Bristol's last frost typically falls around late April, making early May the ideal window to schedule a bulk mulch delivery and refresh garden beds before summer heat sets in. Timing that application right after the frost window closes lets the mulch lock in soil moisture just as annuals and perennials hit their peak growing stride. Getting your order placed a week or two in advance means materials arrive exactly when your beds are ready to receive them.

Try Our CalculatorBristol's position in the upper Holston River valley means low-lying yards can collect standing water after heavy spring rains. Before installing landscape beds or laying stone, assess how water moves across your property. Adding a layer of gravel beneath mulched areas or grading soil away from the home's foundation prevents moisture from pooling and protects plant roots from prolonged saturation during the wet spring and early summer period.

Choosing native plants for Bristol landscapes reduces long-term maintenance and supports local pollinators that are active from spring through fall. Native shrubs like Virginia sweetspire and buttonbush thrive in zone 7a conditions without extra irrigation once established. Pair them with a clean border of dark hardwood mulch to bring out foliage colors and give planting beds a finished, polished appearance throughout the growing season.
