Pre-emergent herbicides only work when Crystal gardeners apply them before target weed seeds germinate in spring and early summer. Ground temperature, not calendar date, determines correct timing for application. Once weeds emerge visibly above ground, pre-emergent products provide absolutely no benefit regardless of label claims.

Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Crystal homeowners with sloped yards or bare soil patches face erosion risk during the region's heavy spring rains. Seed slopes with a fast-germinating erosion control mix and cover with a straw or wood fiber erosion blanket to stabilize soil while grass establishes. For already-landscaped areas, increasing mulch depth to 3 to 4 inches on grades and pairing it with proper edging keeps material in place after Crystal's frequent spring storm events.

Late August through mid-September is the ideal window,soil is warm for germination, cooler air reduces seedling stress, and young grass has weeks to root before October frost. Topdress with a half-inch of compost after seeding to improve Crystal's sandy loam and seed-to-soil contact.
