Ellensburg sits at 1,565 feet in the Kittitas Valley, where the Yakima River carves through hayfields and the Manastash and Umtanum ridges funnel wind across town almost every afternoon. The valley floor is silt loam left behind by old flood channels, which grows timothy hay beautifully but crusts over and blows away once a yard gets stripped for construction. With roughly 9 inches of rain a year and Zone 6b winters, mulch here is less about looks and more about holding moisture in the root zone through a bone dry July. We haul compost blends, screened topsoil, and basalt and river rock to neighborhoods near the Rodeo Grounds and Central Washington University, and south down the canyon to Selah, Terrace Heights, and Yakima.
