I used Mulch Mound to have 3 cubic yards of garden soil delivered. The process was easy and I love that I didn't have to call anyone. I placed my order online, picked my delivery date, laid out my tarp and the dirt was delivered. My delivery had to be pushed back, but I was kept informed via text, which was great. So why not 5 stars? The description of garden soil on the website is "A balanced mix of topsoil and organic amendments ready for raised beds, flower gardens, and new planting areas. Good drainage, solid nutrients, easy to work with." What I got was more like fill dirt. It had a lot of gravel, a lot of clay, and random trash mixed in. I didn't test the soil to see if it actually had "amendments" because I already have compost and alpaca manure ready to add, but if I'd known the quality of the dirt was going to be the same as the bagged dirt I bought last year, I probably would have gotten 2 yards of top soil and a yard of leaf compost for better quality, especially since the leaf compost is cheaper. Photo of my mountain of dirt and just some of the trash I found in it.

Sloped yards and properties near the water in Lake Dallas are especially prone to soil washout during the heavy spring rains that North Texas typically sees from March through May. Covering bare slopes with 3 to 4 inches of shredded hardwood mulch and anchoring it with erosion control netting before the rainy season begins can prevent significant soil loss. For steeper grades, adding native groundcover plants like inland sea oats alongside the mulch layer gives long-term stability once roots establish.

Try Our CalculatorMany Lake Dallas properties feature mature trees that cast deep shade over portions of the yard, making traditional turf grass difficult to maintain in those zones. Converting shaded areas to shade-tolerant ground covers like liriope, Asian jasmine, or cast iron plant, and mulching between plants with two inches of shredded hardwood, creates an attractive low-maintenance alternative. These plants are well-suited to zone 8a winters and tolerate the clay loam soil found throughout the Lake Dallas area without significant amendment.
Delivering to Lake Dallas, Texas
Primary ZIP: 75065+1 ZIP codes
Lake Dallas homeowners adding stone features like retaining walls, dry creek beds, or flagstone paths should pay close attention to base preparation given the area's clay loam soil. Clay expands when wet and contracts during dry spells, which causes improperly installed stone to shift and settle over time. Using a four to six inch compacted crushed granite base beneath any paving or stone feature gives it a stable foundation that handles the seasonal moisture swings typical of north Texas near the lake.
