Landscape fabric underneath is what makes this a decade-long install instead of a weed patch by year two, so budget for it if your beds do not already have it. Edging, whether steel or stone, keeps the rock from migrating into the lawn during Augusta's spring thaw runoff. Some customers pair rock beds with a run of mulch elsewhere on the property for planting areas that still need organic matter.
Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap seams by at least 6 inches since Augusta's sandy loam shifts enough with frost heave to open gaps in a single-layer install. Skipping fabric means weeds root directly in the rock within two seasons. If you already have an older bed without fabric, it is worth pulling the rock back and adding it now rather than living with the maintenance later.
The most common mistake is installing rock right up against downspout discharge points without a splash block or extended pipe. Augusta gets enough spring runoff that direct discharge onto bare rock will wash fines and small stones out of the bed within a year or two, leaving bare fabric showing. Extend the downspout past the rock edge or add a small dry well first.
Order rock and any edging material in the same delivery when possible to save a second trip charge, and consider a slightly deeper 3 inch install in high-traffic areas near walkways since foot traffic compacts a 2 inch layer faster than it does in a static bed. The extra half yard up front costs less than a top-off delivery two years in.
Augusta's sandy loam drains fast, which is good news for rock beds since you will not get the standing water that rots landscape fabric under gravel. With a last frost around May 1 and first frost by October 8, you have a solid window to install before the ground freezes again near Capital City. Rock does not break down or feed the soil the way bark mulch does, so it is a better match for the foundation beds and downspout runs common on Augusta's older lots near Old Fort Western than for planting beds that need organic matter. Homeowners here often choose it specifically to stop the annual mulch refresh routine.
