Most raising and backfill jobs run 6 to 12 inches deep, so a 10 by 10 foot low spot at 6 inches needs roughly 2 cubic yards, and doubling the depth roughly doubles the order. Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
