Sand pairs naturally with paver base gravel on most patio and walkway jobs, and with portland cement if you are mixing mortar on site rather than buying premix. If you are setting a pool, a compactable base stone underneath the sand layer will keep it from shifting once it settles under weight.
Service area
For paver joints in this area, know that clean chip stone has been replacing mason sand in a lot of new installs because it locks in place and will not wash out or get pumped up by freeze thaw cycles. If you are repairing an older patio that already has sand joints, matching the existing material keeps the look consistent, but for new work ask your contractor whether chip stone makes more sense given our winters.
Mortar sand needs to stay dry until you are ready to mix it, and Defiance gets enough spring and fall rain that a tarped pile matters more than people expect. Wet sand throws off your water to cement ratio and weakens the bond. Cover the pile the same day it is delivered if rain is anywhere in the forecast, and keep it up off bare dirt on a pallet or board if you can.
If you are running both a mortar job and a joint fill job in the same season, order the full yardage at once rather than splitting deliveries, since sand does not degrade sitting covered on site through our six month building window. It saves a second delivery charge and gives you a buffer for the inevitable extra batch of mortar nobody accounts for the first time around.
Defiance sits on silty clay loam, soil that holds water and stays heavy underfoot, which is exactly why sand matters here for drainage and workability rather than for growing anything. Most calls we get are for mortar mixing on brick and block repair, paver joint fill on patios near the river, and pool base leveling. With the ground freezing solid past mid October and thawing out around mid April, most of this work happens in that six month window, so people tend to order sand right alongside their paver base stone rather than staggering deliveries.
Masonry sand is washed and finely screened, the right choice for mortar work, paver joints, and sandboxes. Fill sand is coarser and less processed, better suited to leveling, bedding pipe, and filling low spots.
For pavers, screed a 1 inch sand bed over a compacted base rather than using sand to fix deep grade problems. A thin, even bed locks pavers in place. A thick one shifts underfoot.
Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
