Measure the low area in square feet, decide your depth, and order in cubic yards from there. Most jobs that need fill dirt also need topsoil on top of it, since fill is a structural base and nothing grows well directly in subsoil. If the finished area will be lawn or planting beds, plan for a topsoil cap of 4 to 6 inches once the fill is compacted. Mulch or gravel can follow once the topsoil is graded, depending on what the space becomes.

Fuquay-Varina's red clay compacts hard once it's wet, but fresh fill dirt is looser and needs help getting there. Place it in lifts of 6 to 8 inches and compact each one before adding the next, using a plate compactor for small areas or a jumping jack for tighter spots like against a foundation wall. Skipping this step is the number one reason people see their new grade sink a season later.
The most common mistake we see locally is people trying to plant grass or shrubs straight into fill dirt. It's subsoil with the topsoil and organic matter screened out, so nothing grows well in it long term. Always cap finished fill with 4 to 6 inches of real topsoil before seeding or planting, even if the area looks fine right after grading.
If your project spans both raising grade and finishing with lawn or beds, order fill dirt and topsoil as separate deliveries rather than trying to blend them yourself. It's more efficient to place and compact the fill first, let it settle, then bring in topsoil once you can confirm the final grade is right. Trying to combine them on-site usually means redoing part of the work.
Fuquay-Varina sits on red clay that already drains slowly, so low areas in yards near Fuquay Mineral Spring Park and the newer subdivisions off Judd Parkway tend to hold water after a storm. Fill dirt gets used to raise that grade before anything else happens, whether that's a shed pad, a pool deck, or a low corner that never dries out. At 390 feet elevation there's not much natural slope to rely on, so people building up around foundations need compacted fill that stays put instead of settling into the existing clay. This is structural material, meant to solve a grading problem, not to grow anything in directly.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
