Landscape fabric underneath is what turns rock into a decade-long groundcover instead of a weed bed, so plan on ordering that alongside it. Steel or paver edging keeps rock from migrating into the lawn, especially where beds slope toward the clay soil common through this area. If you are also topping off planting beds near trees, a load of mulch for those spots pairs naturally without competing with the rock's job.

Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap seams by at least a few inches. In Fuquay-Varina's red clay, skipping fabric means rock eventually presses into the soil and clay works its way up through the stone within a couple seasons, undoing the whole point of a low-maintenance install.
Rock traps leaves instead of breaking them down, which matters more here than in drier climates because fall leaf drop is heavy through October and November. Plan on blowing or raking beds a few times each fall, otherwise decomposing leaf litter builds a thin soil layer on top of the rock and weeds start seeding into it.
Because this is a one time purchase rather than an annual mulch refresh, it is worth ordering slightly more than the calculator suggests so you have matching stone on hand for any future bed expansion. Buying an extra half yard now costs far less hassle than trying to match color and size on a second order years later.
Fuquay-Varina's red clay drains slowly, and after a heavy Piedmont thunderstorm that means standing water in beds that are packed with organic mulch. Rock does not break down or compact into that clay the way bark mulch does, so it stays put through zone 8a's wet winters and humid summers. It is also the material of choice for homeowners who want their beds to look the same in ten years without a fall refresh.

River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
