At the standard 2 to 3 inch install depth, one cubic yard covers roughly 162 square feet at 2 inches, so a typical 200 square foot front bed runs a bit over a yard at that depth. Go to 3 inches for areas that see heavy runoff off the roofline and you will use closer to a yard per 110 square feet. Measure the bed in square feet first, then match it to the depth you actually want before ordering.

Landscape fabric goes down before the rock, not after, so plan on ordering that at the same time you place the rock order. Edging, whether steel or paver, keeps the stone from migrating into the clay and into the lawn. Some customers layer a thin bed of mulch near plantings and rock everywhere else, which works fine as long as the two zones are separated by edging.
Service area
Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, always, especially in Garland's clay where weeds will push through bare soil within a season. Overlap fabric seams by at least 6 inches and pin them well, because clay shifts slightly with moisture swings and loose fabric edges let weeds find the gap. Skipping this step is the single most common reason a rock bed looks great for one summer and weedy the next.
Rock traps leaves instead of breaking them down, which matters more here than people expect given the oak and pecan canopy in older Garland neighborhoods. Plan on blowing or raking beds clear in late fall before the Nov 15 frost, otherwise decomposing leaf litter builds a thin soil layer on top of the rock that then grows its own weeds by spring.
Because this is a one time install rather than an annual refresh like mulch, it pays to order slightly heavier on depth the first time, 3 inches instead of 2, rather than come back next year for a top off. A thicker initial layer also handles Garland's occasional gully washer storms without washing thin spots down to bare fabric.
Garland's blackland clay drains slowly and holds water after the spring storms that roll through before the Mar 28 last frost. Rock beds set on fabric keep foundations and downspout areas dry and stop the clay from sucking mulch into mud every season. A lot of the newer builds near Firewheel Town Center are going low maintenance front beds, and rock is the material that lets you stop fighting the clay instead of amending it. It is not a fix for planting beds where you want soil life, but for foundation strips and no mow zones it just works and keeps working.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
