Landscape fabric underneath is worth the extra step here, it keeps rock from working down into Indy's clay over time and cuts down on weeds pushing through. Steel or aluminum edging holds a clean line against lawns, and a border of larger stone or boulders looks natural against the flat topography around the Soldiers & Sailors Monument area. None of it is required, but each piece extends how long the install looks sharp.
Service area
Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap seams by at least 6 inches. Indianapolis clay holds moisture close to the surface, so without fabric, rock slowly sinks into the soil over a few seasons and weeds root straight through from underneath. Skipping this step is the single most common reason a rock bed looks tired after 3 or 4 years instead of holding its clean line for a decade or more.
Rock does not feed soil and it traps leaves, so keep it away from beds with perennials or shrubs that want organic matter and regular mulching. In Indianapolis, fall leaf drop is heavy, and rock beds near mature trees need a leaf blower pass every couple weeks in October and November or they turn into a mat of decomposing leaves sitting on top of the stone.
Order slightly more than your calculated total, especially near downspouts where clay soil settles unevenly and low spots eat extra material fast. Combining rock with a mulched planting bed nearby, rather than rock everywhere, saves material and looks more intentional, since most Indy lots do better with rock along hardscape edges and mulch around anything actually growing.
Indianapolis sits on heavy clay that drains slowly, which is exactly why rock earns its keep here, it does not break down into the soil or feed the compaction the way organic mulch can. With freeze thaw cycles running from late October through late April, rock stays put over fabric while wood products shift and decompose. A lot of Indy homeowners use it along foundation lines and downspout runs where clay already pools water after storms. It is a practical fit for the low, flat lots common around the city.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
