Most fill dirt jobs finish with a topsoil cap, since fill dirt itself will not support turf or plantings. If you are leveling before a patio or shed pad, a layer of compactable gravel on top of the fill gives you a firmer base than dirt alone. Straw or erosion matting is worth having on hand if the area sits exposed before winter.
Service area
Do not dump fill dirt in one deep pour and walk away. Place it in lifts of 6 to 8 inches and compact each one with a plate compactor or by wetting and tamping before adding the next layer. Kalamazoo's sandy loam base drains well, but the fill itself will keep settling for a year or more if you skip compaction, and that shows up later as a sunken patch near your foundation or pool deck.
The most common mistake is treating fill dirt like topsoil and trying to plant directly into it. It has no real organic content and compacts too hard for roots to push through. Always cap finished fill with 4 to 6 inches of actual topsoil before seeding or landscaping, and keep that boundary clean so you are not mixing the two layers together during grading.
If you are filling a large area, order fill dirt for the bulk of the depth and save topsoil only for the top few inches where plants need it. This keeps cost down since fill dirt is cheaper per yard than topsoil, and it is structurally the right approach anyway since fill dirt compacts better than topsoil ever will.
Kalamazoo sits on sandy loam, which drains fast but also settles unevenly once you disturb it for a pool install or a foundation repair. Fill dirt gives you a stable subsurface to rebuild that grade correctly instead of just tossing topsoil into a hole and hoping. With a last frost around May 10 and first frost around Oct 11, there is a solid seven month window here for compaction work before the ground locks up for winter. Homes near the older neighborhoods around Kalamazoo Mall often have older utility trenching and settled yards that need this kind of structural fill before any landscaping happens.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
