Service area
Stack your wood off the ground on pallets or rails so Kingsport's humid air and clay soil moisture do not wick up into your rounds. Leave gaps between rows for airflow, and cover just the top of the stack, not the sides, so trapped moisture can still escape. A stack that breathes will stay seasoned through our damp winters instead of picking up mold or going punky by February.
Oak burns long and hot but needs a well established coal bed to really get going, so start your fire with faster catching wood like locust before adding oak splits. Hickory throws great heat too but produces more ash, so plan on cleaning your firebox more often if it makes up a big share of your stack.
Order your firewood in September or early October, well ahead of Kingsport's typical November 15 first frost. Waiting until the cold snap hits means longer lead times and less selection, and a fresh delivery needs a little time to settle into your storage area before you start burning through it steadily.
Kingsport sits in growing zone 7a at over 1,200 feet elevation, which means a heating season that typically runs from mid November through mid April, well over five months of cold nights in the Appalachian valley. Clay soil and the humidity that settles into these hills mean freshly cut wood takes far longer to dry here than in flatter, drier regions, so buying wood that has already been properly seasoned is not optional if you want clean burns. Local hardwoods like oak, hickory, and locust are common in this region and each behaves differently in a firebox, with oak needing the longest seasoning time to burn well. Because our valley traps moisture, green wood sold as ready to burn often is not, and it will smoke, hiss, and gum up your flue right when you need heat the most. Sourcing wood seasoned and split near Kingsport also means it has had time to acclimate to our specific humidity swings rather than arriving from a drier climate and cracking or checking unevenly.
Expect dense regional hardwoods like oak, hickory, maple, and ash. These species burn longer and hotter than softwoods, which is what you want when a cold snap settles in and the stove runs all day.
Firewood needs 6 to 12 months of drying before it burns well. Properly seasoned wood lights faster, throws more heat, and keeps creosote out of your chimney, which matters most in the coldest weeks of the year.
