Most fill dirt jobs finish with a few inches of topsoil capping the surface, since fill dirt itself is not meant to grow anything. If sod or landscaping goes back down afterward, topsoil is the layer that makes that possible. Some jobs also call for a bit of sand on top for final leveling before pavers or a shed base go in.

Place it in lifts of 6 to 8 inches and compact each layer before adding the next, especially around pool decks and foundations here in Margate where the water table is high enough that saturated, uncompacted fill will keep settling for a couple of years.
