Landscape fabric underneath is what turns this into a decade-long groundcover instead of a bed full of weeds within a season. Steel or aluminum edging keeps stone from migrating onto the lawn or driveway, especially useful given the freeze thaw movement here. A lot of Mount Sinai customers pair rock beds with mulch in the planting areas nearby, keeping rock for the no-plant zones and mulch where soil needs to breathe.
Service area
Lay landscape fabric before the rock goes down, not after, and overlap seams by at least six inches. In sandy loam like Mount Sinai has, skipping the fabric means the rock slowly works its way into the soil over a couple of seasons and weeds root through anyway. Fabric also stops the rock from disappearing into the sand line at the edges of foundation beds, which is a common complaint we hear a year or two after a bare install.
Rock traps falling leaves instead of breaking them down, so beds near trees need a fall cleanup with a leaf blower on a low setting or a plastic rake. Metal rakes chip the stone and scratch fabric underneath. Plan on this maintenance especially near mature trees close to the harbor, where leaf drop is heavier than an open lawn area.
Buying the full cubic yard you need in one delivery is more efficient than topping off with bagged stone later, since bag colors and sizes rarely match batch to batch. If you are covering a large front yard bed, order slightly over your calculated amount so you have leftover material for the inevitable low spot or edge repair instead of hunting down a matching bag.
Mount Sinai's sandy loam drains fast on its own, so rock does not sit in standing water the way it might in heavier clay soils inland. That drainage makes it a solid match for beds near downspouts and low spots that channel runoff toward the harbor. With a zone 7b winter, freeze thaw cycles can heave loose stone at the edges of a bed if there is no steel or fabric edging, so plan for that at install. Front-yard groundcover beds are common here because the sandy base keeps the rock from sinking or disappearing into mud over a season.
Landscape rock is stone chosen for how it looks as much as what it does. River rock is smooth and rounded, decomposed granite is fine and packs firm underfoot. Both are sold by the cubic yard for beds, borders, paths, and dry creek beds.
River rock stays loose and rolls, so it suits beds, borders, and drainage runs where it can sit in place. Decomposed granite compacts into a firm surface, so it suits paths, patios, and anywhere you will walk or roll a wheelbarrow.
Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
