Most sand orders in Novi pair with paver base gravel underneath and edge restraints to hold the pattern once it is set. If you are doing a pool deck or patio, you will likely also want paving stone and polymeric jointing sand depending on the finish you are after. For mortar work, pair it with the appropriate cement mix rather than substituting concrete sand, which will not give you the same workability.
Novi's clay loam holds moisture longer than sandy soil, so if you are bedding pavers, screed your sand on a dry day and avoid working it right after a rain event, since damp sand compacts unevenly under a screed board. Let any surface water drain first. This matters more here than in areas with faster-draining soil, because the base layer needs to be uniformly dry to get a flat, consistent screed pass.
A common mistake is using this material as paver bedding sand when chip stone would hold up better long term. Washed sand can shift and allow paver pumping over freezing winters, which Novi gets plenty of given the October to May frost window. It is still the right call for joint fill and mortar, just be aware that many installers now use angular chip stone under the pavers themselves for stability.
If your project involves both mortar work and joint filling, order slightly more than the calculator suggests, since mixing losses and oversweeping joints both eat into your yardage faster than flat coverage math accounts for. Buying it all in one bulk delivery instead of multiple bag runs to a hardware store saves you time on a multi-day masonry job.
Novi sits on clay loam, which drains slowly and holds water after spring rain, so a lot of hardscape work here starts with a proper base rather than laying pavers straight into native soil. This sand fills joints and levels bedding layers without adding to that drainage problem the way finer clay does. With a growing season that runs roughly May to October, most patio and paver jobs get scheduled in that window, and the sand needs to be dry-ish and workable when it goes down. It is also the standard choice for mortar mixing on any masonry work around the city.
Masonry sand is washed and finely screened, the right choice for mortar work, paver joints, and sandboxes. Fill sand is coarser and less processed, better suited to leveling, bedding pipe, and filling low spots.
For pavers, screed a 1 inch sand bed over a compacted base rather than using sand to fix deep grade problems. A thin, even bed locks pavers in place. A thick one shifts underfoot.
Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
