One of the easiest customer service experiences I've had in a long time! Mulch Mound made it so simple. After putting it off for a while, I looked at the weather and knew I needed to get to mulching ASAP before the rain came if I didn't want to wait another week. I put my order in for the next day online and they came right at 9 AM. The employee who dropped off the mulch did a great job, putting it right on the tarp I laid out, she even made sure none of it got on the yard and double checked the truck bed to make sure it all came out. The mulch was exactly what I needed and arrived right on time.

We have always spread our own mulch for the past 24 years. This was our first time with the Mulch Mound - things I liked: they have online ordering and provide a digital receipt which means you can remember how much you ordered (I always forget for the next year!), they were on time, they were able to deliver in 48 hours, they were generous with the portion (we got 9 yards and it felt like a FULL nine yards!), the driver was polite! We have ordered from reputable places, and there is always a little trash in the mulch. The mulch we recv'd from Mulch Mound had barely any... we were pleasant surprised!!! Color was great! Not to mention - the price was competitive and LOWER than other mulch places around. We will use again !! Highly recommend! Thanks Mulch Mound!
Complete Your Outdoor Project
Most fill jobs finish with a cap of topsoil once the grade is built up, since fill dirt is not meant to grow anything on its own. If the area borders a bed or lawn, a few inches of topsoil on top gets it ready for sod or seed. Mulch or gravel around the edges can help hold the new grade where it meets existing landscaping.

Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Place fill dirt in lifts no thicker than 6 to 8 inches and compact each layer before adding the next. Skipping this step is the number one reason yards in this area develop dips and soft spots two or three years later, especially over clay subsoil that already drains slowly. A plate compactor rented for an afternoon is worth it on anything larger than a small backfill job around a post or step.
Mulch Mound Pro Tip
Do not plant directly into fill dirt. It is subsoil, not a growing medium, and grass or shrubs will struggle in it even after a season. Cap the finished, compacted grade with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil before seeding or laying sod. This is especially true in OP where the underlying clay already limits root penetration, so the cap layer matters for anything you want to actually grow.
Mulch Mound Pro Tip
If you are backfilling around a pool or foundation, order a bit more than your calculated volume, since compaction reduces the final height by 10 to 20 percent. It is cheaper to have a little extra on site than to schedule a second delivery for a small top off. Pair the order with topsoil delivery if you are finishing the same week, so both loads are placed before you start grading.
Grading and Filling in Overland Park
OP sits on clay soil that drains slowly, so low areas near foundations, pool decks, and back corners of yards tend to hold water long after a storm passes. Fill dirt solves that by raising the grade, but because the clay underneath is already dense, compaction matters even more here than in sandier areas. A lot of the backfill jobs we deliver for are around new pool installs and additions near the Arboretum area, where grading has to be built up before anyone lays sod or topsoil. Done right, it stops the standing water problem instead of just moving it.

Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill Dirt vs Topsoil
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Compact in Lifts
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
