Fill dirt does the heavy structural work, but most projects still need a topsoil cap on top if grass, beds, or anything else is meant to grow there. Some jobs also pair fill with a load of gravel or crushed stone for drainage layers under patios, pads, or driveway base. If you're finishing the surface, plan on ordering both in the same delivery window to save a trip.
Service area
Fill dirt should go down in lifts of 6 to 8 inches, with each layer compacted before the next one goes on top. Skipping compaction is the single biggest reason people end up with sunken spots a year later, especially over Port Royal's sandy loam, which shifts more than clay-heavy soils once water works through it. A plate compactor rented for an afternoon is worth it on anything larger than a small low spot.
Don't expect fill dirt to grow anything, it's subsoil and it's meant to be structural, not fertile. If you're building up a yard that needs grass or plants afterward, cap the compacted fill with 4 to 6 inches of actual topsoil before seeding or sodding. Skipping this step is a common mistake that leaves people wondering why nothing takes root in what looks like plain dirt.
If your project needs both structural fill and a growing layer on top, it's worth ordering both in one delivery trip rather than two separate ones, since fill dirt and topsoil are priced and hauled differently. On drainage-sensitive spots near low ground, some builders also mix in a thin gravel layer beneath the fill for extra stability before capping with topsoil.
With Port Royal's low elevation and sandy loam base, water tends to sit rather than drain fast in the wet season, which is exactly why fill dirt gets used to raise yards, driveways, and pad sites above the surrounding grade. This is subsoil, not garden soil, so it compacts into a stable base instead of settling or washing out like loose sand can near the wetlands. It shows up on jobs around pools, foundations, and low corners of yards that never quite drain toward the marsh side of town. Once the fill is compacted and shaped, a cap of topsoil goes over it if grass or plantings are the end goal.
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
