Steel or aluminum edging keeps the stone from migrating into the lawn, especially useful in sandy loam where soil shifts more than clay. Some customers also order a bit of topsoil separately for the planting pockets they leave within the rock bed.

On sandy loam like what you have around Rocky Point, skip skimping on fabric prep. Compact the soil lightly first, then lay a commercial grade landscape fabric, not the thin homeowner rolls, before spreading rock. Sandy soil shifts more than clay under foot traffic and rain, and a weak fabric layer will let rock sink into the ground within a couple seasons instead of staying put for the decade you are paying for.

Spread river rock 2 to 3 inches deep over landscape fabric so it stays put and weeds stay down. Lay decomposed granite 3 to 4 inches deep, wet it, and compact it in lifts for a surface that sheds water instead of rutting.
