First time going with this company for mulch and it was an efficient process from start to finish. Website was easy—I told them exactly where I wanted the mulch put on my driveway, and it was delivered perfectly when I got home from work the next day. Best deal around when I compared it to competitors and I will definitely be becoming back.

Most fill jobs finish with a cap of topsoil once the structural grade is set, especially if grass or beds are going in on top. Compactable gravel is worth having on hand near foundations or pool walls where drainage matters more than a soft cap. If you are landscaping over the fill later, order the topsoil at the same time so both loads can be scheduled together.

Areas we deliver fill dirt in Vermilion, Ohio
Do not dump fill dirt in one deep pour and walk away. Place it in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each one with a plate compactor or hand tamper before adding the next layer. Skipping this step is the single most common reason people call us back a year later asking why their yard has a sunken patch near the foundation. On Vermilion's clay subgrade, uncompacted fill settles unevenly as the ground freezes and thaws each winter.
Fill dirt is not a growing medium, it is subsoil stripped of organic material on purpose so it does not decompose and sink over time. If grass, shrubs, or a garden bed is going on top, cap the compacted fill with 4 to 6 inches of actual topsoil. Skipping the cap and planting straight into fill dirt usually means stunted growth, since there is little nutrient content and drainage behaves differently than in native soil.
If you are backfilling around a pool or foundation wall in Vermilion, ask about the fill's drainage behavior before you commit to depth. Straight subsoil compacts well but does not drain as fast as a sand or gravel blend, which matters if water tends to pool against the structure. Ordering a bit extra fill dirt alongside a smaller amount of gravel for the last few inches near the wall often solves the problem cheaper than over ordering either material alone.
Grading and Filling in Vermilion
Vermilion's silty clay drains slowly, which is exactly why so many yards near the harbor and further inland end up with low spots that hold water after a hard rain. Fill dirt gives you a structural base to raise that grade or square up a foundation excavation before the clay underneath causes more trouble. Because it is subsoil, not topsoil, it will not settle from organic breakdown the way compost-heavy fill does. It just needs to be compacted right, which matters more here than in sandier soils since clay subgrade already moves with freeze thaw cycles through Vermilion's winters.
What Clean Fill Is
Clean fill is screened subsoil free of debris, roots, and contaminants. It is made for volume and grade, and it compacts predictably, which is exactly what you want under slabs, in trenches, and behind walls.
Fill Dirt vs Topsoil
Fill dirt builds the shape of the ground, topsoil grows things on top of it. Bring the grade up with fill, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil anywhere grass or plants are going in.
Compact in Lifts
Place fill in layers of 4 to 6 inches and compact each one before adding the next. Dumping the full depth at once leaves voids that settle later, and settling is the one problem fill is supposed to solve.
