Mason sand almost always shows up on a job site alongside pavers, brick, or block, and a lot of Victoria contractors are now using clean chip stone instead of sand for paver bedding since it does not pump up through the joints over time. If your project includes a base course, ask about road base or crushed stone to go under the sand layer. Cement and mortar mix are the other regular pairing for masonry crews working around town.

Mason sand is far finer than concrete sand, which is exactly why it works in mortar but does not compact the same way under a paver. If you are still bedding pavers on straight sand out of habit, know that a lot of Victoria contractors have switched to clean chip stone for that layer because sand pumps and migrates under freeze thaw and heavy rain, and chip stone locks in place instead.
Victoria's clay soil holds water close to the surface, so keep your mason sand pile up on pallets or plywood if it is going to sit more than a day or two before use. A pile set directly on wet clay soaks moisture from below, which throws off your mortar mix ratio and gives you inconsistent workability from the bottom of the pile to the top.
Order mason sand and cement together when possible so your mason is not making separate trips, and buy sand in slightly larger increments than your calculated need since mortar mixing always wastes some material in the mixer and wheelbarrow. A little extra sand left over is far cheaper than a second delivery mid job.
Victoria sits on heavy clay, which is great for holding moisture but terrible for drainage under a patio or walkway, so a lot of local hardscape work leans on sand to break up that clay contact point at the base. With hot, humid summers and a mild winter that rarely freezes hard, there is no real frost heave to worry about, but afternoon thunderstorms move fast and a loose sand pile near the Guadalupe floodplain areas can wash if left uncovered. Masonry sand is washed and finely screened, the right choice for mortar work, paver joints, and sandboxes. Fill sand is coarser and less processed, better suited to leveling, bedding pipe, and filling low spots.
For pavers, screed a 1 inch sand bed over a compacted base rather than using sand to fix deep grade problems. A thin, even bed locks pavers in place. A thick one shifts underfoot.
Slightly damp sand spreads, screeds, and compacts far more easily than bone dry sand, which just flows back into your screed lines. Lightly wetting the pile before you work it saves real effort.
